Links Roundup

Yep, spam rates are up, people are clamoring for someone to do something about it; for some reason it is considered important enough to send deputies after a porn spammer because he spammed a 16-year old girl (heaven forfend) and it seems that it may be hackers (hackers!) behind it all, what with all that nasty malware they're writing. On the bright side for those who have always considered antispammers "terrorists", it should soon be clear that we're patzers compared to the Islamofascists, who've threatened to DDoS our banking system into so many dust motes. I just wonder which of the ROKSO scumbags will rent a botnet to bin Ladin, and whether he'll even know who he's renting it to until the headlines come out the next day. (That's assuming the banks will even talk about it, should al Qaeda actually go after them.)

I admit that I'm pleased, at least, that the headlines today refrained from "spam up 247%!" slugs; I'm getting tired of the useless and context-free quoting of meaningless statistics. I'm staring at my traps folder here and looking at a 200% rise in deliveries over the month of November in trap mail alone, though, so I suppose I'm guilty of the same thing. I'm about this close to restoring my IP-level reject rules for a few dozen known dynamic ranges, though, just to stopper the flow a bit. As much fun as it is to see thirty-five hundred copies a day of what are mostly the same message over and over again, I'm thinking that it's just not worth the hassle. We'll see. Maybe when it hits 5K/day.
